Great job. This was an interesting event, and it felt out of the blue to me - many of these events are usually sub-par. I personally watched and enjoyed the Lone Star event.

Good point, what I meant was I would love to pay a higher premium like $40 or $60 to get all the HD coverage for the entire quarter - like Qualifiers, Arena, and Pro Circuit all for one price at the beginning of the season.

I was actually hoping for something more along the lines of GSL. I'm less inclined to pay $20 for a 3 day tournament, but interested in paying a higher price for a month or two of content, like $60 for a month or two of tons of matches. To each his own I suppose, everyone's got an internal value they put on these things.
I'll be buying it. I want to be a part of the experiment, if nothing else.

I reformatted this article because of a bug on our side. Great read as well.

Damn. This interview was great, Jason Lake is a legend. We need more interviews like this.
Yes, I'm a writer for WP but I wasn't involved in this article, I got to enjoy it for the first time just like all our readers!

Seriously. I've never read such fantastic questions.

You make really great points and I don't mean to diminish the wonderful strides Riot makes and continues to make to have their game be more stable and balanced. Their tournament client has a nice layout and has been impressive to me, (not counting bugs, which are, after all, just bugs that will be fixed).
I definitely didn't mean to imply that LoL's shortcomings are game-breaking. But maybe the constantly-changing landscape isn't what everyone wants? If you've got something down to a science, the last thing you want to see is it changing before you can win some tournaments with it. I know that's not everyone's view (many LoL pros have mentioned they prefer the variance LoL offers), but maybe that's simply been a result of a lack of options. Who knows? I'm not trying to stir up a hornet's nest but I do like to say "maybe" and explore the possibilities.

Well you're certainly right, looking at it today, it's easy to feel that nothing can ever touch LoL.
But Valve is Valve my friend. They can turn around and offer 10 million in prizes without the blink of an eye. They did a tournament just to show off their incomplete game and put up 1.6 million. All I'm saying is, it's possible the balance of power can shift. Players will go where the money is.
And I don't think there's going to be a steep learning curve moving from one DotA game to another. There's plenty to learn, sure, but the fundamental game is pretty similar, no?.

I agree League of Legends doesn't have anything to "fear" as you termed it, but quite factually, they certainly have market share at risk with Dota 2 launching. I'm not suggesting all their players or even a majority of their players will leave, but don't you think a decent percentage of LoL players will at least try Dota 2? Won't some probably stay?
I stand by my opinion: "no matter what DotA game comes in second, League of Legends will come in first as the most played DotA game"
Nowhere do I say anything close to what you wrote: "LoL will be severely affected by Dota 2". My apologies if my article even insinuated this. Riot is the king of the hill here, make no mistake about it. Dota 2 however, will likely join the genre at a solid number 2. And number 2 will probably leech some percentage from number one. What percentage that is remains to be seen of course.

I have some questions:
Why doesn't Blizzard use more maps from the competitive community scene, such as MLG or GSL?
Would Blizzard consider holding polls to determine seasonal maps, even if it were only 1-2 player-voted maps?
Would Blizzard consider allowing their upcoming maps to be playable in Custom games on the ladder to allow for community-driven 'comment periods' where they could be beta tested by the community before released onto the ladder? This is without using the PTR, which fewer players check out.

I think the Witch Doctor is far and away the best class right now. It has too many powerful abilities that do too much for too little effort.
Not only does the ability "Zombie Dogs" summon 3 dogs that tank and deal damage well, but by the time one of them dies you can just resummon all three. Anytime you pick up a heal globe, it heals all the dogs as. They effectively tank everything with the Witch Doctor nukes everything without taking any damage.
Witch Doctors can also equip bows, and some even give bonus stats only to Witch Doctors, making you able to deal ranged damage behind your pets even without any mana. WDs also have the best ranged AoE slow in the game, in addition to powerful AoE nukes like the baneling bombs - err, i mean - frogs.
If it sounds like I'm complaining a little bit it's because the Witch Doctor plays a little more like a Hunter Mage.
Maybe I just want the Demon Hunter to have a pet.

I love these pieces, I love to see discussion around gaming culture and how it continues to evolve that other sports have not. Being one of the last generations to graduate from high school without the internet or cell phones heavily involved to seeing pro gaming in bars is awesome.

Welll, I might have just been playing him too aggressively. I find Yi to be incredible when he is fed and surprising people in lanes and pushing towers. That doesn't seem as possible in Dominion, unless you're just lurking in the jungle all game, which isn't out of the question.

Nice writeup, Bill. I had a similar experience at my first Barcraft in NYC during the MLG Winter Arena. Managers were clueless and confused, owners were ecstatic, wait staff had fun and were responsive and StarCraft fits well in a bar setting.
Cheers!
