Day/Division: Week Six D3 May 21 2001
Players:Strelok vs dde
Map: Typhon Peaks
Score: 0-0 (it was the first game)
Game Time Estimate: 5:30-6:00 captures the whole sequence
Details: DDE has 5 marines and 4 hellions outside Streloks ramp. Unbeknownst to him, Strelok has a larger number of hellions, marines and a bunker. InControl says "if he were to attack, he could be met by a bunker as well as comparable numbers of hellions behind it, so I wouldn't recommend the aggression". Streloks 5 hellions come down the ramp, believing they can easily handle the clump of marines in front, and in doing so line up. DDE seizes the moment, moves commands to flank the hellions and one shots the entire remaining force. Perfect micro makes the lesser force win handily, with 3 hellions remaining. This small engagement actually tilted the early game and snowballed through the match.

I think the article fails to consider the different international dynamics at play between F1 and Starcraft. It's true that the rivalry was diffused immediately when Huk went over to EG, but I'd argue it was bound to be diffused anyway. Indeed, I'd argue that it isn't possible to have any foreign rivalries at the level the article aspires to.
You see, Prost and Senna were both competitors at the very top, fighting for a championship. This is where rivalries really capture the public attention, are intensified, and really make a simplified narrative for the uninitiated viewer. Person X hates person Y, and they are both fighting for the largest prize in the sport.
Not only is there not the same sort of structural clarity within the professional starcraft scene, but rather a group of unrelated repeating events, Huk and Idra at no point have been the strongest competitors in the game. When the most significant foreign events began inviting Korean competition, which was unnecessary for their credibility, and for our enjoyment the Huk vs Idra dynamic was limited in scope, given neither is likely to win the tournament. It's interesting when they play, it heightens their match, but it doesn't define the tournament.
Other rivalries could take their place, but for the most part thus far, Korean stars have lacked marketable personalities, and the language barrier, for the most part, has diminished their capability of developing rivalries with foreign stars. The closest we've seen would be Idra and Jackji, or Idra MC, but there's something missing there and it's any possibility of them meeting each other very consistently in matches that decide tournaments due to the fact that Idra does not compete consistently at the very highest level, as well as the tournament structure. More significantly, we haven't seen any juicy Korean rivalries, even though there's been ample opportunity. Even dominant players who have frequent meaningful games, for instance Nestea and MVP show nothing but respect for one another.
